In Memory of Dr. Zakir Hussain, a tabla player who opened up a new world of music by collaborating with musicians of various genres from around the world

Dr. Zakir Hussain, the 2022 Kyoto Prize Laureate in Arts and Philosophy, passed away at the age of 73.

He received the 2022 Kyoto Prize for opening up new musical possibilities for the tabla, a traditional Indian percussion instrument, through collaborations with musicians of various genres from around the world.

Even after receiving the prize, he continued to perform energetically. Shakti, a fusion band reformed by him and John McLauglin went on its 50th anniversary world tour, and released its first album “This Moment” as Shakti in 46 years. In 2024, he won 66th Annual Grammy Awards in three categories.
