Dr. Takeo Kanade , the 2016 Kyoto Prize laureate in Advanced Technology, received the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Information and Communication Technologies category. The award is given to the individuals who greatly contributed to the development of science and art. Congratulations for the great honor!
According to the BBVA Foundation, Dr. Kanade received the award for “for developing mathematical foundations that underlie the current capabilities of computers and robots to comprehend and interpret visual images and scenes.” (The announcement by the BBVA Foundation )
The award was established in 2008 by the BBVA Foundation in Spain. The previous awardees among the Kyoto Prize laureates, are Dr. Shinya Yamanaka, Medical Scientist; Dr. Donald Ervin Knuth, Computer Scientist; Dr. Michel Mayor, Astrophysicist; Dr. Daniel Hunt Janzen, Tropical Biologist; Dr. Pierre Boulez, Composer and Conductor and Dr. Peter Grant and Dr. Rosemary Grant, Evolutionary Biologists.
