ヌスバウム博士とランガー博士が「バルザン賞」を受賞！

2016年に京都賞思想・芸術部門を受賞した マーサ・クレイヴン・ヌスバウム博士 と、2014年に京都賞先端技術部門を受賞した ロバート・サミュエル・ランガー博士 が9月12日、自然科学と人文科学の分野で国際的に優れた業績をあげた研究者に贈られる「バルザン賞」の受賞者に選ばれました。このたびのご栄誉、誠におめでとうございます！

バルザン財団の発表によると、ヌスバウム博士は、「われわれの倫理的なあり方の再定義といった幅広い哲学的問題への長年の貢献や、グローバルおよびローカル双方における社会正義についての斬新な発想、学術とそれ以外の領域を架橋しようとする意欲」などが評価されました。（原文:”For her sustained contribution to a wide range of philosophical topics that together redefine our understanding of our ethical being; for her transformative reconception of the goals of social justice, both globally and locally; and for her willingness to bridge the divide between the academy and the wider community.”）

また、ランガー博士は、「生体高分子と生体材料の先駆的研究と合成、mRNAワクチンと組織工学の進歩を含むナノメディシン分野の発展」に寄与したことなどが評価されました。（原文:”For pioneering research on biopolymers and biomaterials, and their synthesis, and developing the field of nanomedicine, including advances in mRNA vaccines and tissue engineering.”）

バルザン賞は、イタリアとスイスに本部を置くインターナショナル・バルザン・プライズ財団による国際賞です。現在、文学・道徳諸学・芸術の分野と、物理学・数学・自然科学・医学の分野で、それぞれ2件ずつ計4件が毎年授与されています。また、3年もしくはそれ以上の間隔で、「人類、平和、友愛のための特別賞」が授与されています。
